Gordon Allison
Background
Gordon was born in 1919 in India where his father managed a jute mill. He did his schooling in England and then returned to India where he joined the Army, serving on India’s North West Frontier. Following India’s Independence and Partition in 1947, Gordon came to Australia and joined the Australian Army. He served in Japan in the mid fifties and in Korea during the Korean War.
Gordon met Angela Firth, an Army nurse, at Puckapunyal in the early sixties and they married in 1963. After a Melbourne posting, they moved to Brisbane with their young son and stayed in Brisbane when Gordon retired from the Army in 1969. He worked in real estate for a short period before the family moved to William Street, Buderim, in 1970. Their second son was born the following year.
Buderim - life and community
Keen to be involved in his new community, Gordon took up a position at the Buderim Mountain State School as a janitor/groundsman and all-purpose handyman. He continued in that role until he died. He was a man with a good sense of humour and, with a real sense of fun, was a popular figure not only with students and staff but also in the wider community. He loved life, loved his community and was held in great affection by all who knew him.
Both he and Angela were on St Marks Anglican Church Parish Council, and were members of the Buderim War Memorial Community Centre (now BWMCA) and the Baden Powell Guild (an ex-Scouts/Guides association). They were also willing helpers at school activities and strong supporters of their sons’ sporting interests.
Gordon died in 1982
