Buderim Foundation Grant Helps Local Concert Band - 17 December, 2009
The Buderim Concert Band will hold a musical masterclass for local concert band musicians next year thanks to a grant of $3,090 from the Buderim Foundation.
The grant was made in the 2009 round of Buderim Foundation grants in September which saw $16,500 handed out to local organisations.
The Buderim Concert Band has already established a committee to oversee the planning of this event which will be held on June 26 next year.
The band’s president, Mrs Anne Atkinson, said the committee had been thrilled to secure the services of highly regarded Brisbane musician and adjudicator, Dr Peter Morris, to lead the masterclass.
Dr Morris (pictured) is the Director of Music at Villanova College, Brisbane, where he conducts ensembles, teaches trumpet and administers a department with more than 600 musicians, 30 performing ensembles and 25 staff. He also lectures in conducting at Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University. Dr Morris has also been conductor of the Queensland Youth Orchestra Wind Symphony (2007-08) and the Young Conservatorium Wind Orchestra (2005-06).
Dr Morris has performed internationally on trumpet in a wide variety of genres from Baroque orchestras to commercial session work in Los Angeles. He has also taught in USA universities.
Well known local musicians – Mrs Inez Durrer, Mr Todd Wynyard and Mr Calvin Hunter - will also be providing specialist tuition in the woodwind, brass and percussion areas respectively.
The one-day masterclass will appeal to local concert band musicians of all ages – from school students to retirees. It will be held at the Uniting Church Hall on Buderim and a concert will be held in the evening at the Buderim War Memorial Hall at which participants will provide the community with enjoyable musical entertainment whilst also demonstrating their newfound skills.
Local schools have been alerted to the timing of next year’s event and it is expected that other musicians in the community will also note the date in their calendars. The masterclass fee, which will be kept modest to encourage maximum community participation, will cover the cost of musical tuition, lunch and morning and afternoon tea.
Mrs Atkinson said the Buderim Concert Band aimed to ensure that its presentation of the masterclass would bring with it substantial benefits for individual band participants, for the bands in which they participated and for the wider community for whom they played.
