The Buderim Foundation has launched a new initiative to celebrate the memory of  family members and friends and pay tribute to their unique contributions to the local community.

The memories of eleven former Buderim residents from all walks of life – with different interests and passions have been preserved and honoured permanently in the records of the Buderim community.

Donations - Gifts in Memory - have been received by the Buderim Foundation in their names. The donations, made by the donors to honour the memory of someone very special to them, are a permanent part of the Foundation's funds and will generate an income to be used as grants to fund, or part-fund, community projects.

Local author Barry Leigh has brought a series of interesting and compelling stories of these loved ones to life. He has done this in the true Buderim volunteering tradition and believes there are many more stories yet to be written. Barry's work has been brought to life with the graphic design skills of Alex Sweet, a member of the Foundation's marketing committee.

So far, tributes have been written for Gordon Allison, Donald Cogill, Les Day, John Monks, Ines Ohlendorf, Greta Savill, Tom Simper, Stuart Weir, Harold Whittle, and Tom and Olive Wolley. Their stories can be read here.

Foundation Deputy Chair, Simon Whittle, said: "We expect that, in time, there will be hundreds of stories, building a treasure house of rich history and an enduring legacy of recognition for those who have meant so much."

Mr. Whittle said the Foundation would be taking part in Buderim's Big Bash this month (June) to help celebrate Queensland's 150th year.

"The theme of our participation will be to promote Gifts in Memory. This would be a great opportunity for other Buderim residents to donate a Gift in Memory of someone dear to them."

He said the Foundation accepted anything of value - money, shares, art - which could be invested to generate an income for the Foundation which this year will be making its second round of grants to fund community projects.
